About SJCRSPA
SJCRSPA is a community-focused organization that brings together retired school professionals to continue their dedication to education and service. Our members support local schools and educational programs, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and community engagement. All school personnel and those interested in supporting retired school personnel in these efforts are welcome.
The San Jacinto County Retired School Personnel Association, SJCRSPA Local Chapter #195-6, is an affiliate of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, TRTA.
SJCRPA Projects and Activities
Explore our current projects that aim to make a positive difference in the lives of students, educators, and the community. Get involved in our initiatives and be a part of the transformative work we do.
Community Volunteer Hours
Our members are encouraged to stay active within their community. Each member selects areas of service and documents their volunteer hours. Local organizations that have benefitted include Shepherd and Coldspring Senior Citizens Centers, Helping Hands Food Pantry, Care/Share Mission, as well as local libraries, nursing homes, churches, community organizations, and individuals in need of transportation or care. During the 2025/26 school year, SJCRSP members documented thousands of volunteer hours.
The Children's Book Project
This project is a service activity sponsored by local chapters of TRTA. The purpose is to put books into the hands of children who otherwise might not have books of their own. Members donate books or money at their monthly meetings. The monetary donations are used to purchase books that are then wrapped and distributed to children through Shepherd and Coldspring-Oakhurst schools. Contact us if you would like to make a donation of books or funds for this worthy project.
Food Drive
In October and November, members bring non-perishable food items to the monthly meeting. These items are divided and boxed for delivery to the Helping Hands Food Pantry in Shepherd and the Care/Share Mission Food Pantry in Coldspring.
Toiletries/Requested Items Collection
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), so our April project is the collection of items requested by SAAFE House, a family advocate organization that empowers victims of family violence and sexual assault. We also collect travel or regular-sized soaps, shampoos, lotions, deodorants, and other toiletries which are donated to our local food pantries.
Monthly Meetings
SJCRSPA has eight meetings each year, loosely following the traditional school calendar. We take off for the Christmas and summer vacations. So, there are no meetings in January, June, July, or August. Meeting agendas include the organization's business as well as time for meals, socializing, and learning.
Conferences, Conventions, and Legislative Impact
Throughout the year we have various opportunities to connect with other chapters, the parent organization, TRTA, and with our legislators. These connections, whether face-to-face or through various updates and newsletters, keep us informed on legislation impacting retirees and educators/education in Texas.
